The Field Consulting is a specialty firm that helps leaders cultivate the skills and presence necessary for open, honest dialogue and model these conversations as the cultural gold standard for the entire organization. Our name comes from the 13th Century Sufi poet Rumi, who wrote, "Out beyond ideas of wrong-doing and right-doing, there is a field. I'll meet you there."

We believe that everything is possible. What we get in life is largely a product of the nature and depth of the conversations we have. Conversations that occur in Rumi’s field – where people suspend judgment and speak openly and straightforwardly – are conceptually simple yet incredibly challenging in practice. Most people believe honesty is the best policy. Yet, they struggle to convey difficult messages constructively. When uncomfortable, they water down the message. They drop hints and beat around the bush. They send coded signals via body language and tone of voice. They avoid the issue altogether for fear that talking would make things worse. Quality suffers.

People with exceptional communication skills find ways to discuss the undiscussable. Moreover, they do it in a way that creates and sustains emotional resonance with others. In the years ahead, we will assess our leaders still more critically by how skillfully they ensure that everything is on the table for serious conversation and exploration.
